ADDIS BAZAAR WAS A GREAT SUCCESS – Part I (Ottawa) October 19, 2000 The Association for Higher Education and Development (Ahead) is pleased to report that its fund-raising event, Addis Bazaar, which took place on September 16, 2000 at the Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa, Canada, was a great success. Addis Bazaar raised a total of $5209.00 Canadian dollars all of which will be used to start the Ahead Bursary Program for medical students at the Addis Ababa University. The first batch of 18 medical students will be sponsored as of September 2000. Under this Bursary, each student will receive 30 Birr a month for three consecutive years while studying at the medical school. (Check new developments for details about Bursary Program) About 150 people attended the function, including the prayer for peace, a luncheon and a bazaar. Some of the highlights were:
· Distinct, colourful and a blend of tradition and modern motifs, the bazaar was a centre of attraction as eager buyers and curious visitors scrambled to get their hands on one of a kind items for reasonable prices.
· Mrs. Lucille Cuevas who managed a display table of books by and on Ethiopians provided a rare opportunity for people to educate themselves about Ethiopia.
· The Ethiopian desk was equally attractive as curious browsers admired ancient books in Amaric and Geez on paper and parchment on history, literature and grammar.
· The luncheon was a truly Ethiopian hospitality as guests were treated to a buffet of delicious dishes. The coffee ceremony was a hit as guests enjoyed the famous Ethiopian coffee in dainty cups that they were asked to keep as present.
(Stay tuned. We will be posting highlights of speeches from the Bazaar) |
