Addis Bazaar Was a Great Success (Ottawa) September 12, 2001 The Association for Higher Education and Development (AHEAD) will sponsor 18 medical students from the Jimma, Gondar and Addis Ababa Medical Faculties at the Addis Ababa University thanks to funds raised at Addis Bazaar, held at the Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa, September 8, 2001. Addis Bazaar, an annual fund-raising event, is a major source of funding for AHEAD's Bursary Program for medical students at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. AHEAD was established in 1999 with the objective of contributing towards development efforts in Ethiopia. About 200 people attended the delectable buffet luncheon, a bazaar of jewellery, clothes, craft, basketry and enjoyed a reunion of communities and friends. Addis Bazaar is a successful event that brings together the Ottawa community to support a Diaspora initiative. Addis Bazaar 2001 raised a total of $4351.64. Although short of our goal, it is still
enough to sponsor a newgroup of 18 medical students from three faculties. Addis Bazaar was, however, a great success
in bringing key members of the community together to see for themselves what we
have achieved. Many have committed to
support future functions and several have come forward with pledges to support
the bursary program. As our only fund
raising event, Addis Bazaar is key to ensuring the sustainability of this
project. Dr. Jennifer Dickson who entrusted AHEAD to operate a memorial fund in honour of her late brother, Mr. John Dickson, was named friend of AHEAD in recognition of her support to the association. Mrs. Alganesh Teferi, a resident of Addis Ababa, the first AHEAD volunteer in Ethiopia was also named Friend of AHEAD in recognition of her support to the association in Ethiopia. Both volunteers received certificates of appreciation from Senator Donald Oliver, patron of AHEAD. Hundred of Ethiopians assisted with donations of food, selling tickets, helping with various tasks and supporting the event. Addis Bazaar, held for the second time, is seen as an event with great potential to mobilize the Ethiopian Diaspora to play a role in development efforts.
