GBF-Ahead to Establish Resource Centers in Jimma and Addis Ababa
Two large rooms have been rented in the center of the city of Jimma for the proposed GBF-Ahead Resource Center which will be launched soon. This was made possible through the assistance of the City Council of Jimma, whose officials saw the merit of launching a Resource Center in the City for the benefit of the residents of the city. It is hoped that GBF-Ahead Fellows will play a pivotal role in extending voluntary services at the Resource Center. The fellows and other students of the Medical Faculty will also benefit from resources that will be made at their disposal at the Center. The two rooms need renovation before opening the Center. There is also ample space for expansion should the need arise. An application has been submitted to get telephone line. In a similar development, two large rooms totaling 60 sq m room have been acquired for the same purpose in the premises of the Medical Faculty in Addis Ababa. While handing over the rooms to the GBF Secretariat on June 7, 2001, the Dean of the Medical School in Addis Ababa, Dr Kebede Oli said that "He appreciates the efforts of GBF-Ahead in trying to establish the said Resource Center particularly since the materialization of this effort would certainly be to the benefit of the Medical Faculty’s staff and students". He further emphasized that "the Resource Center can fill the current lack of information and inadequate library resources and hoped that the Center would provide students the opportunity to access the internet and also serve as a training center through the provision of books, monographs, journals, CD-ROM etc." He said that GBF-Ahead should acquire the necessary budget to run the Center. |
