In August 2000, AHEAD launched its flagship bursary program intended to provide financial support to students from medical faculties in Ethiopia. AHEAD Fellows, selected based on financial need and academic excellence, receive a small monthly stipend for three consecutive years, covering the period prior to their internship, to help them defray some of the costs incurred as they pursue their medical training.
Modestly starting with 12 second-year medical students selected from three universities in Ethiopia – Addis Ababa, Jimma and Gondar – AHEAD’s bursary program has since expanded to sponsor students from the University of Mekelle (since20??) and currently supports xx students. The total number of students who have benefited from the bursary program is xx.
Originally ran in partnership with the GetachewBolodia Foundation (GBF), the program is now solely administered by AHEAD and continues to provide allowances to deserving students who see them not only as a supplement to their meager funds but as a vote of confidence in their abilities to carry their studies out successfully, often in the face of important challenges, be they of financial or other nature. Over the next weeks, we will start featuring some of our Fellows on this page; please check back to meet some of the admirable young people we have had the privilege to assist over the years.
