Keon Donation – A Step AHEAD Senator Keon – A Step AHEAD ![]() OTTAWA (November 27, 2001) -- Senator Wilbert J. Keon donated (value
approximately of $2000) medical books to the
Association for Higher Education and Development (AHEAD) at a small
ceremony today at 1 p.m. on Parliament Hill.
“The value of information and learning is essential to the development
of a society. I am grateful for the
opportunities I have had, and felt it appropriate to pass the texts along to
those in need”, stated Senator Keon, who is also the Director General of the
University of Ottawa Heart Institute. AHEAD is a voluntary, not-for-profit and
non-political organization founded in Ottawa, in 1999, with Senator Donald
Oliver as patron. Its goal is to contribute towards development efforts in Ethiopia by
mobilizing, coordinating and channeling the necessary resources and relevant
expertise to Ethiopian higher academic institutions. Ahead has three distinct programs: w
Sending medical
books and journals to help alleviate the growing scarcity of current
publications in the medical faculty the Addis Ababa University. w
A Bursary Program
to assist outstanding medical students by providing monthly allowances for
three consecutive years to ensure that they receive modest assistance while
pursuing medical training. w
Exploring ways to
operate a small-scale project to solicit and send training equipment for
