Programs of Ahead Ahead has three distinct but complementary programs: I. Book Shipment
The AAU Medical Faculty continues to face serious shortage of current
medical books and journals. To respond to this problem, Ahead has a book program
which aims at sending up to 1000 medical books and journals annually to the AAU
Medical Faculty. The recipient of the shipment is the Medical Library of AAU
but the beneficiaries include the Jimma, Gondar and Addis Ababa Medical
Faculties. Ahead works with the Medical Sciences Library of the University of
Ottawa, McGill University, local health institutions in Ottawa and a group of
medical doctors in Canada, who donate books, journals and other relevant
publications on regular basis. Moreover, Ahead has an agreement with Ethiopian Airlines to ship books
and journals to Addis Ababa at a special rate.
This agreement provides considerable assistance in meeting some of the
financial pressures associated with storage, ground transportation, packing and
air freight. Moreover, Ahead depends, to a great extent, on volunteers who travel to
Addis Ababa and offer to carry a book or a box. Depending on the offer, Ahead
pays full, partial or nothing for the books carried by voluntary travelers. II. Ahead Bursary Program
In August 2000, Ahead launched the Ahead Bursary Program for
Medical Students at the AAU. Under the
Ahead Bursary Program, 18 medical students have been selected to receive a
monthly allowance of 30 Ethiopian Birr each for three consecutive years,
covering the period prior to their internship. In August 2000, Ahead signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the
Getachew Bolodia Foundation (GBF) in which the former has agreed to administer
the Bursary Program on behalf of Ahead for a nominal administration fee. Ahead
has given GBF full delegation to develop the selection criteria and to recruit
and select Ahead fellows. On its part, Ahead has agreed to sponsor a new group of medical
students each year and to continue supporting the groups for three consecutive
years, up until the students begin their internship. (See table below)
III. Equipment
Project: Ahead is currently
exploring ways to operate a small scale project to start sending basic training
equipment and diagnostic tools for use by medical students during their
training and upon graduation. This
project is being considered in order to respond to a common problem faced by
fresh graduates who are often sent to rural Ethiopia to practice medicine but
lack the necessary equipment and reference materials. Negotiations will soon start in Addis as to the protocol to send those equipment while potential partners will be approached to seek assistance with a regular donation of new and used equipment. |
